Caveat emptor. I have to confess, dear listener, that this edition of the podcast is not up to par. Oh sure, the songs are all excellent but the sequence and "flow" is severely lacking. I have failed as curator when I can't even order songs in a manner of more significance than an iPod shuffle.

Perhaps I'll do better on my WFMU fill-in this Saturday at 3pm EST. Or maybe I'll just waste my time playing Simpsons Tapped Out on my iPhone instead of preparing like I did for this podcast. (My handle is "djpbruno" if you should want to add me as a friend.)

If anyone would like to purchase the above product for me (a mere $68 retail!), I would gladly accept. I have a beard and it needs to be tamed. Yet even with this mammalian hindrance, I somehow manage to fill a biweekly podcast with new music. It's not an impossible task, though admittedly, it is slightly more demanding than complaining.

The Unblinking Ear Podcast: Note to Self

If you're going to put together a podcast, try not to do it while drunk.

Also, you might not want get drunk in the first place when you're on a self-imposed deadline to post a new podcast.

Otherwise you might do things like record an entire segment of back-announcing without your microphone plugged in so instead you'll be recording through your computer's built in mic and sounding like you're in a well.

Then you'll have re-record the segment by which point you'll be so tired that you consistently flub your lines and to achieve some semblance of coherence you'll have to do more patches than Steven Alder in "Civil War."

Of course, you could be stone cold sober and somehow manage to mute an entire song anyway.

I apologize for the relative lateness of this podcast.

I usually spend my Sunday night assembling the podcast for posting on Monday morning but last night I watched the WWE Royal Rumble. I then occupied the rest of my night with composing a 1500 word letter of my thoughts on the event to send to Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer Online.

Am I joking? Let's just say that if there's anyone out there who wants to pay me to write about professional wrestling, I will gladly listen to offers.

The Unblinking Ear Podcast: 2010 (Again)

Welcome to this edition of the now weekly Unblinking Ear Podcast.

In our previous installment, we heard some of the best rock music of 2010. Here, we hear the music I missed 2010 but is worthy of your attention. For the past month or so, many have been publishing their best of the year lists. I've spent that time going through the ones from people I respect and listening to their picks which I hadn't heard. I'm not even close to done and I've already found enough stuff to fill an entire podcast. And there's more where that came from. Hopefully, I'll be done with 2010 by the time Pazz and Jop rolls around. Expect the next couple of podcasts to be peppered with previously unheard (by me) 2010 releases, along with a bunch of new records and, of course, the old stuff from when curmudgeons like me thought music really had it going on.

For now, I'll tip my hand and cite these fine people with fine taste as sources from which I'm swiping content. I have the feeling that some of the more waggish of you will comment that this podcast is better than my actual "best of" podcast. You know what? I might agree with you. The contents of this podcast were entirely determined by a magic 8-ball. It's the same decision making process I use for ordering takeout. You may think that making life choices, however minor, based on the outcome of product made by Mattel is asinine at best and has the characteristics of a supervillain at worst. I say it makes as much sense as oblique strategies, horoscopes, psychiatry or most religions.
